W 52nd and Eichorn Ave, January 14th, 2023

$275.00

The first use of the new car studio setup. Unfortunately this winter hasn’t been as snowy as I’d hoped. This is one of the few snow paintings of the year. I really enjoy painting the tree skeletons and indicating the warmth of the bare twigs accumulating into a reddish brown haze. The scene can end up having a warm overall feel to it, even though there’s a blue-ish grey tint to the snow shadows. And how do you depict the overwhelming details of a scene like this without painting every little thing? Use a shape language vocabulary that you’ve honed through painting hundreds of scenes and sketches just like this. A fence here, a window there, a base ground line, a roof peak. Design it, balance it, squint your eyes and then finally say it’s finished once the overall painting says what you want it to say. And always be critical afterward. How could I have made it better? Why on earth did I do THAT? Do that every time and steady progress is made.
